ABOUT
This project involves the completion and partial renovation of an existing family house. The challenge was to infuse the style and character of a “mountain villa” into a space with pre-existing elements and flooring that could not be changed. Our task was not to demolish, but to elevate. Through strategic interventions—new ceilings, bold use of color, and the addition of wooden textures—we managed to transform the house into a cozy home connected to nature, seamlessly integrating the existing furniture and flooring into a new, modern concept.
CONCEPT
The concept is based on visually restructuring the spaces without heavy construction work.
-
Color Blocking: Since the architecture of the bedrooms features complex geometries (sloped ceilings, niches), we used the “color blocking” technique. By painting geometric shapes in multiple colors, we visually corrected the proportions and gave each room a unique identity.
-
Wood as a Unifier: To “ground” the interior and connect it to its mountain context, we added massive wooden elements to the walls and ceilings, which correspond with the existing flooring.
PROJECT
Living Area: Here, we made the most significant intervention with a new suspended ceiling. We designed a massive wooden grid (coffered ceiling), which not only adds a sense of luxury but also visually zones and divides the large room into two functional parts without the need for walls.
Dining & Kitchen: In the dining area, we transformed the space around the fireplace by adding wooden paneling and highlighting volumes with paint to create a focal point. The kitchen underwent a “facelift”—we kept the functional layout but replaced the front panels for a more modern look, added new lighting, and introduced a black marker wall for drawing, adding an artistic and playful element.
Winter Garden (The Lodge): This zone remains a place for authentic gatherings. The design follows the existing stone and wood elements, simply emphasizing the connection to the forest through the large windows.
Bedrooms & Kids’ Room: Each bedroom on both floors is designed with its own character using bold color combinations (color blocking) on the walls and ceilings. The children’s room is transformed into a fairytale world with house-shaped frames and themed wallpaper, creating a protected play environment.
CONSTRUCTION
The realization required high craftsmanship, especially in integrating the new elements with the old.
-
Carpentry: The installation of the new wooden ceiling required precise fitting to the existing structure.
-
Painting: The color blocking technique demands perfectly straight lines and precise cutting at the corners, especially at the transition between walls and sloped ceilings.
